Driving Question
How will the use of biofuels impact world hunger?
Biofuels have been proposed as part of a solution to the problems of energy security and climate change. Yet many claim that the push for biofuels may have unintended consequences, driving up the price of food beyond the means of the global poor. The UN and many development agencies have expressed concern that diverting land from the production of food to the production of biomass for fuel has an adverse impact on hunger. On the other side of the controversy, groups like the National Corn Growers Association counter these claims. This complex and important issue relates to energy, food supply, land usage, and climate change.
